Key words

ACE days
'Aiming for a College Education' days take place in most schools for Year 9 students.

Clearing
If a student fails to get the grades required for the place they have been offered, they enter the clearing process. Clearing allows them to apply for any unfilled places left at any university.

Coursefinder
A system designed to help applicants to higher education choose a suitable degree or diploma course. Through a questionnaire completed by students.

Students are provided with a list of courses that best match the student's study interests and preferences. It also guides the student through the decision making process and lists sources of further information.

Coursefinder is available to students in Year 12.

Gap year
Taking a year off between school and university. This is also known as 'deferred entry'. Most universities will allow students to do this but check the individual requirements of each institution.

This is submitted by each student with his or her UCAS form and is written by each student. Time should be taken to ensure it is drafted carefully.
Presentation is important. It should cover extra-curricular activities and ideally should show that the student is a 'well rounded' individual.

Placement

A year usually spent in an industrial/work environment commonly found in Engineering or Business degrees.

UCAS
University and Colleges Admissions Service acts a a clearing house for full-time degree courses and handles applications from over 400,000 students a year who apply to over 260 UK institutions offering degrees and diplomas (nearly 300 institutions)

UCAS form
